A striking centrepiece in a snug or study, the Marquetry Poker Set is a reflection on the nature of geometry itself. Featuring tessellating abstract shapes – one of the seven key elements of art – inlaid by hand into the wood marquetry box, this playful and original work of art was inspired by the iconic Majolica tiles designed by the acclaimed Italian architect Gio Ponti. Expertly crafted by Alexandra Llewellyn and her team, the incredible attention to detail continues within the box, with squares of satin walnut inlaid on the inside lid to create a distinctive basketweave effect and the classic suits in a pack of cards arranged in the centre. Behind each of the four suits, the marquetry artist has created a trompe l’oeil effect using a piece of wood selected for its darker tone, introducing a beautiful sense of three-dimensionality. Housing 305 traditional clay poker chips, custom made by the oldest poker chip makers in the US, and two packs of Alexandra’s Signature geometric playing cards, the dealer button is carved from semi-precious turquoise, laser engraved with the letter D, and the blind buttons cut from iridescent mother of pearl.
